S&A’s Lou Gehrig Volunteer Supports Yates 5K Run/Walk

More than 550 runners and walkers enthusiastically appeared on an overcast, rainy morning on June 4, 2006 to pay tribute to David Yates, a popular teacher at Solon High School who lost his four-year battle with ALS on October 6, 2000.  This popular run and walk is in its eighth season.

“Unfortunately, I have never met Mr. Yates, however, I learned of the love and admiration for him through my discussions with relatives, friends and other teachers that participate in the event”, stated Eric E. Skidmore.  Skidmore added, “it was amazing to see the loyal supporters of this event stay put and see the race through to its end even though much of the race was completed in a torrential downpour.”

This year the Yates 5K Run/Walk raised nearly $15,000 and, in accordance with the wishes of Mr. Yates, the proceeds were donated to the ALS Association, Northern Ohio Chapter and a family in Solon, where a father of two children, is currently battling ALS.  In the 8-year existence of this event, it has raised nearly $55,000, a fitting tribute to the dignity and determination of Mr. Yates.

“Among many outstanding sponsors, was the Solon High School Student Council . . . which is a fitting posthumous tribute to Mr. Yates”, concluded Skidmore.
